Reiter Cleanup May 2007
Well, Reiter has claimed 2 of my weekends in a row. Good times! The cleanup was a success. Tons of people there and i saw just about everyone with garbage bags helping out. My group pulled out:
- 1 - 20″ TV
- 1 - 1″ x 20′ steel cable
- 1 - car battery
- 5 bags of trash
Oh and of course we did some wheeling while we were at it! Checkout Jordan’s pictures.

Has anyone tried to get the rusted out car out? The one I am thinking of is up the (new) graded forest roads, near Zeke’s Wall.

I think it did get hauled out. I saw 2 rusted car bodies next to the dumpster on my way out. I’m not sure where Zeke’s Wall is? Do you mean Index Wall?

No, Zeke’s wall.
So you drive in off the road, past the parking, go past the powerlines and to the T. You take the T intersection right and drive up along the forest road (past the gate). When you get up in this area you can end up in basically one of serveral dead-ends. The “rightmost” path - the roads you get if you always choose right - end in a T intersection with two cul-de-sacs on either end (and some pretty good bouldering). Anyways the right cul-de-sac has a rusted (maybe burned, I dunno) out car that got rolled off the road. I noticed it when I was out there, oh, two weeks ago?
I’d volunteer to help get it out to the road so someone can scrap it, but it’d take at least two trucks to do safely probably.
Its dumb that I have to describe it like this… I contacted the Reiter Trails Association people since they said a updated map was “upcoming” and asked if I could either help or offered to do it myself, but, I never heard back from them. I do appreciate their work, though!

Ok yeah, i think i know where you’re talking about. A lot of people refer to it as “the rock garden” i believe. I haven’t been up that way in a while actually. I’ve camped up that way a couple times, but not in a while. I would imagine that they got the car. There was a guy with a big ‘ol tractor. I know Crash, one of the guys from NW Wheelers who organized the event, scouted out the whole area on Saturday evening. If the car was still there, i’m sure he found it and they hauled it out.

That’s good. I’ll keep an eye out for it next time I’m out that way juuust in case, but it was obvious so I am sure your crew got it. How do I get involved with a cleanup effort at Reiter?
May 9th, 20079:40 am at
There are a lot of ways to get involved. Usually you can just show up to one and help out. To find out when one will be, you can do a number of things:
-check on Reiter Trail Watch’s website, http://www.reitertrailwatch.org.
-If you have a Toyota offroad capable vehicle, you can join WATTORA (Washington Toyota Territory Off Road Association) at http://www.wattora.com as the cleanups are posted in the upcoming events section.
-If you have an offroad capable vehicle, not necesarily Toyota, you can Join NW Wheelers at http://www.nw-wheelers.com. These are the guys that put on the last cleanup.
The announcement for cleanups are cross posted in all of these above resources. I will also be posting on my main page when cleanups will be. There are usually two a year.
It’s great that you want to get involved! Let me know if you have any questions.

While I opine that the Toyota Taco is a truly noble animal, I run a Land Rover. My girlfriend just picked up a TJ that she’s been lusting over parts for. There’s pictures around at our website adventioneering.com, in case anyone doesn’t know what a Land Rover looks like. Ha Ha. (Just look for the puddle of fluid underneath).
I’ll keep my eye out for the next effort and do my best to show up. Someone has to, and access to that area specifically is dicey enough as it is. I think the responsible trail users have to do everything they can to present an image of working with the land trustees, because they sure notice the bad apples.
The Rover kids, PCRC I think it is, are holding a cleanup at Evan’s Creek on June 2nd. I haven’t been involved with any of the groups here in Washington and was thinking about going out and just showing up to pitch in, but the woman is informing me we’re taking a trip up to Victoria instead that weekend, so we’ll see.

oh… I still want to go out and do some GPS surveys of the road network at Reiter to produce some maps. Surely someone has done this, but if so, I can’t find a) the person or b) their maps… so I am going to end up doing it myself, I can tell. Probably sometime soon, like the 13th.

Yeah I went up there today mapping; they pulled the car.

My uncle used to have a Land Rover Discovery that he took offroading. He sold it and bought an older Mercedes G-Wagon with a Chevy LS1 motor in it. I prefer the Toyotas. My brother and i both drive em and my friends that have em never have problems. Rock solid trucks that take a lot of punishment.
I know some guys on NW-Wheelers are trying to do some GPS maps, but it doesn’t look like its coming together so well. If you have some maps that are useful i would really like to see them. I’ve been trying to put some sort of map together for my own personal use but i don’t have a GPS so it makes it difficult. If you have a map w/ the main paved road as a common point that would be really great to have.

I don’t mind the problems, which probably makes me an ideal land rover owner.
I have 1 or 2 more trips and then I’ll produce a high quality flat map (trail map) and some iso renders (to help familiarization of the area). I’ve also been logging features for inclusion on the map, like the mine, trail heads, etc. You can see more (and the data from today) at http://www.adventioneering.com/2007/05/13/reiter-pit-survey-1/
It’ll be done pretty soon, anyways.

Awesome Map! Even though it’s not complete, still very good and i can understand where everything is. Labeling lake isabel makes it really easy to figure out what trail is what. I annotated your map and put on some more trails that i know of (approximate) and tried to name the ones you show. The names i gave them are the ones used by the groups i’m a member of, including Reiter Trail Watch who is the group mostly in control up there so the names are somewhat official.
Here’s the map: http://www.4wdtoyota.com/annotatedreiter.jpg
Let me know when you plan on going back up to Reiter. I may be able to tag along and give you a hand in figuring out where all the trails are and keep track of what’s what. It gets pretty confusing up there with a lot of the trails merging and crossing one another.
Nice job!

Here’s a bit more: http://adventioneering.com/cartdata/reiter-raw-v4.jpg
I got wedged up in a creek before I got to the log bridge, though, not enough clearance. Sucked, actually, did a fair bit of damage. My ride-height would have been stock before I added winch, gear, etc etc. so I really need to get on some heavy duty springs to get it at least back to normal if not +2-3″

Looks good! I’ll have to compare it to the other map and get an idea of what’s what. Sorry to hear about your rig, i hope nothing serious was damaged. Let me know the next time you plan on heading up. I’d like to join you and help get a good map made. Since i drive with a lot of the local 4×4 groups, i have a pretty good idea of where all the trails are and what their “official” names are.

I was going to give you a shout when I headed out, but it was spur of the moment on a weekday and I figured you worked. I had some free time, and figured, hey why not!

oh hey, shoot me an email sometime. Or my IM/jabber/gtalk is the same address as the email address I’m using when I post. Talking via comment is kinda weird
